Man charged for vehicular homicide after pedestrian death

A driver in New Jersey was charged for vehicular homicide after reportedly hitting and killing a 58-year-old woman at a Hawthorne farmer's market. The incident happened at about 2:20 p.m. on Aug. 10 after the accused man allegedly drove through a barricade at the outdoor market and hit several pedestrians. In addition to the death, two other people who were hit were sent to St. Joseph's Trauma Center with injuries.

According to witnesses at the scene, the 48-year-old driver continued to travel in his pickup truck after hitting the three pedestrians. One of the pedestrians was pinned underneath the truck and dragged for about half a mile. Prior to the recent incident, the man reportedly had one previous criminal conviction for DUI as well as other traffic violations.

Witnesses say the accused man never used his brakes even as people pounded on his window in an effort to get him to stop. After the accident, the driver was apparently so distressed that he was sent to the hospital for evaluation. He was held in police custody on $200,000 bail.

The severity of charges after an incident like this one will depend greatly on the results of an investigation. A person accused of vehicular homicide after a similar incident may want to enlist the help of an attorney while gathering evidence to establish that they did not intentionally set out to cause harm. An attorney may further assist in negotiations and the questioning of witnesses. Under some circumstances, a plea bargain may be a legitimate option.
