16 arrested in drug sting

On Sept. 10, several New Jersey residents were arrested for their alleged involvement in a cocaine distribution ring. A Morris County prosecutor stated that the crime ring was operating in New York City as well as New Jersey's Union, Hudson, Bergen, Passaic and Morris counties. Police executed search warrants on Sept. 10 and arrested 16 people, six of whom are considered past violent offenders. More than a dozen law enforcement agencies in northern New Jersey collaborated on the investigation.

While executing the search warrants, police allegedly recovered 13 vehicles, four pounds of marijuana, $7,000 and 930 grams of cocaine. The estimated street value of the cocaine is around $93,000. The prosecutor claims that the investigation was initiated by information gathered by a police officer in Morristown. In addition, most of the arrests allegedly involved wholesale drug distributors in contrast to low-level dealers. Six of the people arrested are Morris County residents, aged 26 to 51 years old.

Two of the Morris County residents arrested were released on their own recognizance. The other four were being detained at Morris County Correctional Facility on more than $100,000 bail. The 26-year-old female who was released faces charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana greater than one ounce and possession of marijuana more than 50 grams. Some of the more serious charges the other suspects face include possession of cocaine, conspiracy to possess cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute greater than one-half ounce.

People facing serious felony charges often benefit from seeking legal counsel as early as possible. Lawyers may be able to challenge the legality of the investigation or the search warrant used to make the arrest. Legal counsel might also be able to negotiate for reduced charges or more lenient sentencing if the defendant chooses to cooperate with the prosecutor's case.
