New Jersey man accused of killing mother

A 24-year-old New Jersey man who was accused of stabbing his mother to death was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 23 to enter a plea of insanity. The man was accused of committing the crime on Sept. 1 in Ho-Ho-Kus, a township in Bergen County.

Authorities from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to what was initially thought to be a home invasion at the residence where the man lived with his mother on Sept. 1. They reportedly found the 63-year-old woman's body around 3:30 a.m. The accused man was brought into the prosecutor's office for questioning when he appeared to have an anxiety attack. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where he remained in custody for the next two weeks.

The accused man was charged with multiple crimes, including murder and weapon offenses. He was reportedly being held on $2 million bail while his attorney was planning an insanity defense. It was not known if he has been released or if he is still in custody.

Being convicted of murder can result in serious penalties that can potentially include a long prison sentence and a criminal record. However, there are several different defense strategies that a defense party can utilize. For example, if the evidence against the person is circumstantial or does not connect the person to the crime, the accused can potentially plead not guilty and risk a trial. If there is strong evidence that the accused person did commit the crime but the incident was caused by mental illness or psychosis, the attorney can potentially create an insanity defense. Otherwise, the accused person may plead guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence that may include reduced jail time.
