6 New Jersey teens detained in hazing case

Six Sayreville War Memorial High School football team members were taken into custody for allegedly hazing others at the school. The detained teens range in age from 15 to 17 years old, and the police state they are searching for a seventh individual for his alleged role in the case. All are being held pending petitions in juvenile delinquency for their suspected criminal conduct.

Prosecutors allege that the hazing and abuse incidents occurred between Sept. 19 and Sept. 29. According to authorities, the accused team members held others against their will and improperly touched them. Additionally, one person was allegedly kicked in the head during the hazing and abuse incidents.

In addition to hazing, accused team members were also charged with aggravated sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, conspiracy and criminal restraint. They are currently all in custody until a family court hearing to determine whether they will remain in juvenile detention or will be released to their parents while their cases progress. At least three other football team members have told authorities they were hazed and sexually assaulted by their older football team members.

In addition to consequences for the current criminal charges, including possible imprisonment, many young people who are charged with crimes do not think about the potential long-term consequences also associated with a criminal conviction record, such as difficulties with employment.
