Son of New Jersey mayor faces drug charges

New Jersey police have detained a 28-year-old man, the son of the Edison mayor, on multiple drug charges. The incident in question took place during the evening hours of Jan. 12 after local law enforcement officials responded to a report about an idling vehicle that was trespassing on a private residential property on Milton Avenue.

According to reports, when officers arrived at the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m., they said that the male driver inside the vehicle was unconscious. Moreover, police allege that there was approximately $400 in cash, roughly 200 packs of heroin and some pills and marijuana with the driver. As a result, officers took the man into custody on a single count of drug distribution and three counts for possessing a controlled, dangerous substance.

Since the man is the son of the town's mayor, who also serves as the public safety director for Edison, authorities have decided that the criminal trial should take place in Piscataway to avoid possible partiality. The $25,000 bail set by the Piscataway judge presiding over the case was posted by the man's father, police stated.

The state of New Jersey carries strict drug laws and penalties that can have a huge impact on the life of a person accused of various criminal drug charges. Besides heavy fines, probation and incarceration, a criminal record can complicate a person's hopes of having a successful career, obtaining decent employment opportunities and more. A local criminal defense attorney, however, could possibly contest the allegations in an effort to get the penalties lowered if a conviction appears likely. For instance, if the responding law enforcement officers failed to conform to proper protocol anytime during the incident, the attorney representing the defendant might try to weaken the charges by arguing that any evidence collected at the time is invalid.
