Mark Salling charged with child pornography possession

New Jersey residents who were fans of the hit television show "Glee" may be interested in learning that star Mark Salling was taken into custody on Dec. 29 on charges of possessing child pornography. Reportedly, Mr. Salling's bond was set at $20,000.

According to reports, the Internet Crimes Against Children unit of the Los Angeles Police Department went to Mr. Salling's home in Sunland, a Los Angeles neighborhood, around 7 a.m. with a search warrant. Upon searching the home, they took Mr. Salling into custody. He was reportedly booked into the Los Angeles County jail in downtown Los Angeles.

Mr. Salling played the character Noah Puckerman on "Glee" from 2009 through 2015. The police did not say what, if anything, that they found upon searching Mr. Salling's home. It is unclear whether Mr. Salling remains in custody or if he has an attorney. Sources also do not indicate when his first court appearance might be scheduled.

When people are charged with a sex crime, they may face many harsh consequences. In addition to potentially long prison sentences, they may also be forced to register on the sex offender registry, be placed on long-term sex offender probation and lose their reputation. Many people who are convicted of sex offenses also have difficulty finding employment or housing, and some may have trouble with being approved for credit. These collateral consequences may continue long after their case is completed. Those who are charged may benefit by getting help as early as they can after being charged. A criminal defense attorney may be better able to identify defenses that can be used before or at trial.
