Alleged drunk driver hits 5 cars in parking lot while naked

A New Jersey man was arrested after allegedly smashing his car into five parked cars at a Wayne shopping mall on July 28. Responding officers found him sitting naked behind the wheel with an open beer can.

According to authorities, Wayne police and security officers from the Willowbrook Shopping mall received reports of a car accident in the mall parking lot at approximately 5:30 p.m. Officers found a 52-year-old man sitting naked in a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. He was not injured, and there was an open can of Coors Light 16-ounce beer sitting in the center console of the vehicle.

After the man was clothed, officers had him perform a series of field sobriety tests. He was taken into custody and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle with an open container of alcohol. He was later released to family members. The damaged cars were towed from the scene.

Individuals convicted of DWI in New Jersey could face harsh consequences, including incarceration, heavy fines and the loss of driving privileges. However, a defendant may be able to fight the charges or have them reduced with the help of a criminal defense attorney. An attorney could protect a client's rights during police questioning and provide essential guidance throughout the legal process. After reviewing the case, legal counsel may recommend disputing the blood alcohol or field sobriety tests submitted into evidence, which could lead to the charges being dropped. In other situations, a lawyer may advise negotiating with prosecutors for a plea deal that reduces the charges and penalties if the defendant agrees to plead guilty.
