Man charged with conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the homeland securities investigation unit of the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, an 18-year-old man was charged with conspiring to commit murder in New Jersey. The man was taken into custody on Oct. 24.

Law enforcement investigators allege that the man used the Internet to offer his services as a hit man in exchange for cash. He allegedly traveled to Mahwah, where he met with a man that he reportedly believed wanted to hire him. The man was actually an undercover officer.

Police obtained search warrants for the man's car and his home, where they allegedly found multiple items of evidence. The man is being held in the Bergen County Jail with a bail that is set in the amount of $1 million. He was not given a 10 percent bond option. In addition to the charge of conspiring to commit murder, he is also facing charges of possessing a silencer, possessing a gun for an illegal purpose and unlawfully possessing a weapon.

People who are facing accusations of committing serious felonies might want to get help from criminal defense attorneys. A lawyer may be able to build a strong defense against the allegations that have been made against a client. The attorney may thoroughly investigate what happened in order to identify problems with the state's case and locate witnesses for the defense. The attorney might negotiate with the prosecutor in order to try to secure a dismissal of the charges or plea to a lesser offense. In some cases, the lawyer may fight the matter through trial.
