New Jersey man charged with child porn on his smartphone

According to law enforcement authorities with the Mercer County Prosecutor's office, a 44-year-old New Jersey man was charged with possessing and distributing child pornography using his smartphone. The man appeared in court for his initial hearing on Nov. 15 via video link from where he was housed in the Mercer County Jail.

The prosecutors stated that they had the man's phone for a different investigation. While they were searching it, they reportedly found four pictures that depicted boys under the age of 13 engaged in pornographic activity. The 44-year-old man reportedly admitted to possessing child pornography and distributing it via Google groups.

The man's appearance in Mercer County Superior Court was for his initial bail hearing. The judge decided to leave the man's bail at where it was set, at $20,000. The judge also issued two orders. The first prohibits the man from having any contact with children who are under the age of 18 while his case is pending. He was also ordered to stay off of the internet. The man had no prior record of conviction.

People who are charged with sex crimes often face aggressive prosecution. If they are convicted as charged, they may face lengthy prison sentences, fines and other penalties. Even after their sentences are completed, people who are convicted of sex offenses face ongoing collateral consequences. People may have difficulty finding jobs or housing and obtaining credit. Those who are charged may want to get help from an experienced defense attorney who understands how to defend against these types of charges.
