Police say woman stabbed man during dispute

A 24-year-old woman in New Jersey was charged for first-degree murder after a man succumbed to stab wounds on Nov. 28. Police responded to an apartment building at around 11 p.m. Nov. 27 after they had received several reports about a possible stabbing. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 29-year-old man in critical condition outside of the apartment.

Police and prosecutors believe that the accused woman stabbed the man at the apartment while the two were having a fight. The woman was held in custody on $1 million bond. In addition to the murder charge, the woman is facing a charge for possession of a weapon for an illegal purpose. If she is convicted on both of the counts, the woman could face a minimum prison sentence of more than 30 years.

The man who was found at the scene of the incident was initially treated for his injuries at the scene. He was then transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he was declared dead just before 1 a.m. Reports did not indicate the relationship between the deceased man and the defendant or the nature of the alleged dispute that they had at the apartment.

A criminal defense attorney may be able to help a person who is facing a first-degree murder charge to argue that they were acting in self-defense. If the defendant was injured during the incident, evidence of these injuries could help their case. Testimony from witnesses who can attest to the defendant's good character could also be used to build a defense.
